Education and Colonialism in India: Digital Essay

Role: Researcher, Co-Author

I have long been interested in the intertwining of the history of education and colonialism in India.

A colleague and I had the opportunity to create this digital essay website as an end-of-semester project for Dr. Sravanthi Kollu's SAS 183: The Vernacular in South Asia: Language, Culture and Politics.

You can visit the digital essay here, which can be read from start to finish or perused by topic. We break down the issue into four chapters: 1. Pre-British Forms of Education in India, 2. Early British and Indigenous Debates on Indian Colonial Education (1775-1841), 3. Primary vs. Secondary, Vernacular vs. English (1841-1941), and 4. Legacies of Colonialism in Indian Education.
